Counseling Services
-
Weekly sessions are recommended for the first 6-8 sessions of treatment to establish a therapeutic relationship and to learn and practice new coping strategies and behavioral changes (especially when there is a mental health diagnosis). After that, the therapist and the client can discuss whether switching to bi-weekly appointments is more appropriate for ongoing work together. We believe the goal of counseling is for people to learn new patterns and coping skills and to gradually terminate counseling, with the understanding that they can resume at any time for “booster” sessions or more long-term counseling.
-
Similar to individual counseling, it is recommended that couples or families commit initially to six to eight sessions.
-
Parent consultations (when the child is not attending counseling) or other non-therapy sessions can be scheduled on a limited-time basis at the frequency desired by the client.
-
A child progress call is often needed to update caregivers on the counseling progress. These brief calls can provide an important touch point during the process.
-

Payment and Insurance Information
Thrive offers private pay counseling services, but is working towards contracting with some insurance companies in the near future.
If you have insurance that has out-of-network (OON) coverage, you can use the Thrizer to find out more about your coverage for therapy.
If you register with Thrizer, you can pay for a session up front, then I can provide a superbill, and you can authorize the insurance company to process it through your account. They will track payments and provide up-to-date info on progress toward any deductibles, so you can take full advantage of your benefits.
Some employers provide Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) which will cover short-term therapy. This may also cover some marriage or family counseling.
Some churches have funds available that can be used to provide scholarships to individuals for counseling. If you (or someone from your church administration) would like to arrange this, we are happy to partner with you and can often offer discounts to those referred through scholarship.
Thrive offers a limited number of appointments on a sliding-scale fee, depending on the circumstances. Please contact us to find out more.
Methods of payment can include cash, credit card, Venmo, or check.

Who is the Therapist?
Adene P. Karhan, LCSW
Hi, my name is Adene Karhan, and I am a licensed clinical social worker in PA and NY. I began my work as a therapist at a private Christian group practice in Delmar, NY, in 2013, and became licensed as a clinical social worker in 2018. I moved to York, PA, in 2022 and became licensed as a clinical social worker in PA in January 2025. I am excited to launch my own part-time private practice counseling within my community.
As a counselor, I bring a long history of working with couples and families in a variety of settings spanning a wide range of specialties, including foster care and adoption, elder care, developmental disability, special education, employment and disability, and domestic violence. I have worked with individuals of all ages and families of all life stages.
Since 2016, I have also worked at Cornell University, where I continue to work part-time. Throughout that time, I have worked on a variety of different projects for both state and national partners. This work includes providing consultation, technical assistance, curriculum development, and training on topics such as mental health and employment; co-occurring mental health and disabilities; trauma-informed care; accommodation needs at school and work; and trauma-informed practices for professionals and organizations. Through this role, I also regularly engage in public speaking at both statewide and national conferences, including presentations and bootcamp workshops.
This blend of therapeutic work with individuals and families and larger systems work with organizations energizes me and provides a variety of lenses through which to explore situations and support growth and change. As a therapist, I often collaborate with parents, schools, and others to establish the best plan to support individuals and families. The unique blend of experience in disability and mental health can be particularly helpful.
On a personal note, I have been a Christian since early elementary school when my grandmother started taking me to Sunday school. I attended Messiah University, where I received my BA in Family Studies. I currently attend Connections Church in York. I am married to my high school sweetheart, with whom I recently celebrated 30 years of marriage. We have a young adult daughter and son, and a hound/terrier mix. In my free time, I enjoy gardening and crafting, and I have an Etsy store at https://www.etsy.com/shop/StitchStashDesigns.
My friends all know that I love to hear people’s stories and how God is at work in their lives. No matter what you are experiencing or where you are right now, I would love to meet you, sit down with a cup of coffee or tea, and hear your story. Please reach out if this or anything on this website resonates with you.
Send me a quick message, and we’ll get back to you within one business day.
